Can I work and still receive SSI benefits?
You can begin to work and continue to receive SSI benefits as long as your wages and other resources don't exceed the SSA's income limit for SSI; but your monthly benefit amount will be reduced in proportion to your income. Here's how the SSA reduces your income. Both the federal benefit amount and the SSI countable income limit are $794 (in 2021).
Do the Social Security benefits run one month behind?
Yes. The benefit payment received in May is for the month of April. In order to be entitled to a benefit a person must be alive the entire month which is why SS benefits are paid a month behind. That does not apply to SSI (supplemental security income) which is not social security but is managed by the Social Security Administration.
How is my monthly benefit amount determined under SSI?
The SSA counts various types of income against your benefit amount, including:
- Wages and other money you earn from working
- Certain types of payments you receive, such as alimony, child support, or veterans’ benefits
- In-kind income, which is money family or friends pay towards your housing, food, and other essentials
- A portion of the income earned by others people in your home, such as your spouse
Is SSI considered taxable income?
Supplemental Security Income benefits are considered to be assistance, and that means they aren't taxable. Like welfare benefits, they don't have to be reported on a tax return. However, the IRS differentiates between Social Security retirement benefits and SSI payments—SSI payments are not taxable, but benefits may be.
Does SSI pay ahead or behind?
Social Security benefits are paid a month behind. April's benefits are paid in May, May's in June, and so on. Social Security regulations require that a person live an entire month to receive benefits for that month.

You can then decline Part B if you choose, since it requires a monthly premium. If you are not receiving retirement benefits as you approach age 65, you should contact Social Security three months before age 65 to sign up for Medicare Part A and B.
